Free cancellation and hotel vouchers: how they work
6 min read

"Free cancellation" means you can cancel your booking without penalty until a precise date, stated in the rate conditions. "Non-refundable" means the amount paid stays with the hotel, whatever the reason for cancelling. The voucher is the confirmation you receive by e-mail after payment and show on arrival.
These three notions decide how flexible your stay is and how relaxed you will be on arrival. They take a few minutes to read.
This article has two halves: first, how to understand a rate's conditions before you confirm; then how to check your voucher, use it at check-in, and react if it does not arrive or if your plans change.
Free cancellation or non-refundable: reading the conditions
For the same hotel and the same room, several rates often coexist. The difference rarely lies in the room itself; it lies in the conditions. So before comparing amounts, compare conditions.
"Free cancellation until..."
You can cancel at no cost until the date and time stated. After that deadline, cancelling triggers a charge, often the first night or the whole stay, as displayed. Write the deadline down somewhere: that is the date that counts, not the arrival date.
"Non-refundable"
The rate is lower, but the payment is final. A cancellation, whatever the reason, does not lead to a refund. Some hotels still make a gesture depending on the situation, but nothing obliges them to: do not count on it when choosing.
"Modification"
Changing a booking (dates, number of people, room type) is not the same as cancelling. A change depends on the hotel's availability and can alter the price. On a non-refundable rate it is often refused, or treated as a cancellation followed by a new booking. The conditions displayed say what is possible.
In every case, take a screenshot of the conditions when you pay. If there is a disagreement later, that text is what counts, not a memory.
When a non-refundable rate makes sense
A non-refundable rate is not a trap: it is a trade. You give up flexibility in exchange for a lower price. It becomes worthwhile when your dates are genuinely fixed.
- A family wedding or a ceremony whose date will not move.
- An Omra for which the visa is already confirmed and the flight already issued.
- A business trip approved by your employer.
- A short stay booked shortly before departure, when little can still change.
Conversely, prefer a rate with free cancellation when something can still change: leave not yet approved, a visa pending, a relative in fragile health, a flight not yet booked, or simply wanting to hold a room while you compare other options. The extra cost is the price of that freedom, and it is often reasonable compared with the risk.
The deadline: watch the time and the time zone
The cancellation deadline is generally expressed in the hotel's local time, not Morocco's. A hotel located east of Morocco reaches the deadline before you do; a hotel located west of Morocco, after. When the deadline falls at a precise hour, that detail can turn a free cancellation into a paid one.
The simple rule: do not wait until the last day. If you know you have to cancel, do it as soon as the decision is made, and at the latest the day before the deadline. You spare yourself the time-zone arithmetic and the risk of a customer service that is hard to reach at the exact moment you need it.
Also be aware of public holidays and weekends: the hotel may take longer to confirm a request. Acting early remains the best protection.
The voucher: what it is and what to check
After payment, you receive a confirmation e-mail: that is your voucher. It gathers the details of your booking and proves that the stay is paid. The hotel receives its own copy. Payment in dirhams with a Moroccan bank card takes place on the group's secure booking engine; our help page covers that step.
As soon as it arrives, read it line by line. A mistake spotted the same day is much easier to fix than one discovered at the hotel's front desk.
- The hotel's name and address, to avoid confusion with a property with a similar name.
- The travellers' names, spelled as on the passports.
- The check-in and check-out dates and the number of nights.
- The number of rooms, the room type and the number of occupants per room.
- The board basis (room only, breakfast included, half board).
- The booking reference, to quote in any exchange with the hotel or our customer service.
- The reminder of the rate conditions and, where applicable, the amounts payable at the hotel, such as a tourist tax.
On arrival at the hotel
Show your voucher at reception, printed or on your phone, together with the ID of the person in whose name the booking was made. Both documents must carry the same name. A booking in Marrakech and a stay in Mecca follow the same logic.
Keep an offline copy: a screenshot or the PDF saved on your phone is enough if there is no signal when you arrive. If reception cannot find the booking, give the reference on the voucher and ask the hotel to check again. If the problem persists, call us straight away and we will liaise with the hotel.
The hotel may ask for a card imprint or a deposit for extras: that is common practice, separate from the room payment already made.
Voucher not received, cancellation or change: how to proceed
The voucher does not arrive
First check your spam folder and the e-mail address entered at booking. If you find nothing, contact our customer service on WhatsApp at +212 684-060606 or by phone at +212 5 20 19 19 20, 7 days a week, with the traveller's name, the hotel and the dates. We check the status of the booking and send the confirmation again.
Cancelling or changing
Cancellation and change requests go through our customer service, not through the hotel directly. Write to us with the booking reference and the precise request. We apply the rate conditions you accepted before paying: free within the deadline, with a charge beyond it, not possible on a non-refundable rate.
Where a refund applies, the amount goes back to the card used for payment. The timing depends on your bank and on the rate conditions; we confirm the request to you, and your bank tells you when the credit appears on your account.
You now know how to read a rate and a voucher. Compare hotels in dirhams on Hotelo and choose, for each stay, the flexibility you actually need.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my hotel booking can be cancelled for free?
The rate conditions are displayed before payment and repeated on your voucher. Look for the words "free cancellation until" followed by a date, or the words "non-refundable". If in doubt, take a screenshot and ask our customer service before you pay.
I have not received my hotel voucher, what should I do?
Check your spam folder and the e-mail address entered at booking. If it is not there, write to us on WhatsApp at +212 684-060606 or call +212 5 20 19 19 20 with the traveller's name, the hotel and the dates. We check the booking and send the confirmation again.
Can I change the dates of a non-refundable booking?
Rarely. A non-refundable rate is tied to the dates booked, and a change is generally refused or treated as a cancellation without refund followed by a new booking. Contact our customer service with your reference: we check what the hotel accepts in your case, with no guarantee of the outcome.
