Staying in Frankfurt

Frankfurt is first and foremost a city of transit: its airport, one of Europe's largest hubs, welcomes many Moroccan travellers on a stopover or a business trip, and its central station is a major rail junction. It is also Germany's financial capital, recognisable by its skyline of towers, and a trade-fair city whose hotels fill up several times a year. Behind the business image lies a pleasant city to live in, with the banks of the Main, the museums and the lively lanes of Sachsenhausen, well worth discovering over a weekend.

Choosing a hotel is mostly a trade-off between convenience and setting. The central station district has the most hotels and puts the airport a few S-Bahn stops away, but some of its streets are unappealing at night; the city centre and Sachsenhausen are more pleasant for strolling. Above all, check the trade-fair calendar before booking: during those weeks, availability melts away and prices rise sharply across the whole city. Finally, as everywhere in Germany, shops are closed on Sundays, so plan your shopping ahead.

Where to stay in Frankfurt

• Around the central station (Bahnhofsviertel)

  The most convenient district for trains and the S-Bahn to the airport, with a very high density of hotels in every category. A mixed atmosphere: look at the exact street and recent reviews before choosing, especially with a family.

• The city centre, the Altstadt and the Zeil

  Between Römer square, the cathedral and the Zeil shopping street, everything is within walking distance. Chain hotels and more elegant addresses; the right choice for a first leisure visit.

• Sachsenhausen, on the south bank of the Main

  The district of museums and traditional restaurants, with quieter streets and a village feel. Pleasant for a stay as a couple or a family, linked to the centre by footbridges and the tram.

• Westend and the trade-fair district

  An elegant residential neighbourhood close to the exhibition grounds and the university. Business hotels and apart-hotels, perfect for a trade fair; quiet in the evening, with the centre reachable by tram or on foot.

Good to know before you book

• For a short stopover or a very early flight, hotels at the airport or in the station district, linked by S-Bahn, take the stress away; for a proper stay, prefer the centre or Sachsenhausen.
• Check whether your dates coincide with a major trade fair: if they do, book very early or consider a hotel on the outskirts with good S-Bahn or U-Bahn connections.
• Air conditioning is not standard in mid-range German hotels and breakfast is often charged separately: two points to check before confirming if you travel in summer or with children.
