Staying in Istanbul

Istanbul is one of the favourite destinations of Moroccan travellers, and it is easy to see why: a vast city straddling two continents, Ottoman mosques and palaces, bazaars where you can haggle in Arabic or French, halal food on every corner and an atmosphere that feels familiar without ever being dull. The choice of hotels is very wide, from small boutique hotels on the historic peninsula to large international properties in the business districts, plus apartments with kitchens that families appreciate.

Before booking, keep in mind that Istanbul is spread out and traffic is heavy. The district you sleep in shapes your days: the European side concentrates the monuments and the shopping, while the Asian side has a more residential rhythm. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; summer is hot and very busy, winter cool and rainy. Moroccan school holidays and religious festivals push demand up, so it is wise to book early for those dates.

Where to stay in Istanbul

• Sultanahmet

  The historic heart: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace are all within walking distance. Ideal for a first stay and for doing without transport, but the district is quiet in the evening and hotels are often small.

• Taksim and Beyoğlu

  The lively district around İstiklal Avenue, with its cafés, shops and nightlife. A wide choice of hotels in every category and easy access to the metro. Best if you like going out at night; some streets are noisy.

• Laleli and Fatih

  The area well known to Moroccan traders for its textile wholesalers, close to the Grand Bazaar and Eminönü. Practical hotels and a very commercial atmosphere during the day.

• Kadıköy (Asian side)

  On the Asian shore, a lively and more residential district, popular for its markets and restaurants and linked to the European side by ferry. A good choice for a long stay or a return trip to Istanbul, less so for a hurried first visit.

Good to know before you book

• Istanbul has two airports, Istanbul Airport on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side: check which one you land at before choosing your district, as journeys get longer at rush hour.
• If you plan to get around without a car, pick a hotel near a tram or metro station; the network is practical, and the Bosphorus ferries are a pleasant way to cross from one shore to the other.
• With a family, check room size and whether there is a lift: in the old districts, many hotels occupy narrow buildings with compact rooms and stairs.
