Staying in New York

New York is often reduced to Manhattan, but the city is far larger: five boroughs, a subway that runs day and night, and hotels in each of them. Your choice of neighbourhood sets your pace. Midtown puts the theatres, the department stores and the famous skyscrapers at the foot of your hotel; Downtown and its old business districts are quieter in the evening; the surroundings of Central Park are residential; Brooklyn and Queens often offer more space a few subway stops away.

A few realities to know before booking. New York rooms are often small, especially in Manhattan, and the displayed price does not always include taxes or property fees. The city is packed around the year-end holidays; the depth of winter is cold but calmer; summer is hot and humid. Three airports serve the city, one of them in New Jersey: choosing your hotel according to your arrival airport avoids a long transfer. Direct flights link Casablanca to New York, and the subway lets you do everything without a car.

Where to stay in New York

• Midtown Manhattan

  Times Square, Broadway, Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building: postcard New York, with the highest density of hotels, from chain towers to small addresses. Central, noisy, always on the move.

• Downtown (Financial District, Tribeca, SoHo)

  The south of the island: old business districts, ferries to the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge. Often recent hotels, quieter streets in the evening and at weekends.

• Upper West Side and around Central Park

  Residential neighbourhoods, museums, elegant buildings and the park a few steps away. Fewer hotels, a neighbourhood feel appreciated by families and by those who want to sleep in peace.

• Brooklyn and Queens (Williamsburg, Long Island City)

  Across the East River: newer hotels, often larger rooms, views of Manhattan and a direct subway. A good compromise for longer or family stays.

Good to know before you book

• Read the total before confirming: in New York, taxes and 'property fees' are often added to the displayed rate, and breakfast is rarely included.
• A room 'for four' may have only one large bed: check the number of beds and the size, and ask for a family room if you travel with children.
• Choose your neighbourhood according to your trips: a hotel close to a subway station served by several lines simplifies every journey.
