Staying in Rome

Rome is visited on foot, and the district you pick decides what you will see without effort. The historic centre, between the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, puts everything within walking distance, in old palazzi where rooms are often small. Monti, near the Colosseum, and Trastevere, across the Tiber, offer a village feel with narrow streets and trattorias. Prati, around the Vatican, is more residential and quieter, while the Termini station area gathers a large number of hotels and guesthouses at every price level.

Rome is busy all year: spring and autumn are the most pleasant times, summer is very hot and crowded, and the major Catholic religious festivals draw pilgrims from all over the world, filling accommodation well in advance. Two airports serve the city, with a direct train to Termini from the main one and buses from the second. Many places to stay are guesthouses or apartments in old buildings, sometimes without a reception desk or a lift: read the arrival conditions carefully before booking.

Where to stay in Rome

• The historic centre

  Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori and the Trevi Fountain on foot, in a maze of lanes with no metro. The charm is complete, rooms are small and the streets stay lively late.

• Termini, Esquilino and Monti

  Around the central station, the widest choice of hotels and guesthouses, with the airport train and two metro lines. Monti, right next door, adds pleasant lanes and the Colosseum on foot.

• Prati and the Vatican

  A residential district of wide avenues, quiet in the evening, with the Vatican on foot and the metro to reach the centre. Popular with families for its shops, markets and roomier accommodation.

• Trastevere

  The village-like district on the right bank, with trattorias and squares that come alive at night. Plenty of charm, little metro: you get around on foot, by tram or by taxi.

Good to know before you book

• Much of the old centre is closed to unauthorised cars: do not plan on a vehicle, or choose a hotel with parking outside that zone.
• In old buildings, check for a lift, air conditioning in summer and, for a guesthouse, the arrival hours and how keys are handed over.
• Rome applies a city tax, as most Italian cities do: it is generally settled on the spot at the hotel rather than at booking, so allow for it.
