Staying in Seville

Seville is one of the Spanish cities closest to Morocco in history and atmosphere: flowered patios, azulejos, shaded lanes in the old centre and monuments inherited from the Islamic era, such as the Giralda, a former minaret turned cathedral bell tower, or the Alcázar. For a Moroccan traveller, the city is reached by ferry from Tangier to Tarifa or Algeciras and then by road, or by plane. The choice of accommodation is mainly between the historic centre, in high demand, and the neighbouring districts that are quieter and easier to reach by car.

The historic centre, around the cathedral, the Santa Cruz quarter and El Arenal, gathers charming hotels, small hotels in old patio houses and tourist apartments, all within walking distance of the main monuments; car access, on the other hand, is restricted and parking is complicated. Across the Guadalquivir, Triana keeps a neighbourhood soul with its ceramics, markets and small restaurants. Further north, La Macarena and the Alameda de Hércules are livelier in the evening. Seville's summers are very hot; spring and autumn are pleasant seasons for walking.

Where to stay in Seville

• Santa Cruz and the historic centre

  Lanes, patios and charming hotels a stone's throw from the cathedral and the Alcázar. Everything is done on foot; in return, narrow streets, evening noise and very limited car access.

• El Arenal and the banks of the Guadalquivir

  Between the cathedral and the river, near the Torre del Oro: classic hotels and apartments, slightly easier access and a riverside promenade.

• Triana

  The working-class quarter on the other bank, known for its ceramics workshops, its market and its tapas bars. Apartments and small hotels, local atmosphere, a bridge to cross to reach the centre.

• Nervión and Santa Justa station

  A modern district with chain hotels, shopping centres and easier parking, close to the Santa Justa high-speed rail station; practical by car or train, with buses and metro to the centre.

Good to know before you book

• If you drive from Morocco, choose a hotel with parking, often paid, or outside the historic centre: the streets of the centre are narrow, often pedestrian or with restricted traffic.
• Hotels set in old patio houses sometimes have rooms without an outside window or stairs without a lift; check the description and photos if you need a family room or easy access.
• Holy Week and the Feria draw enormous crowds and accommodation fills up very early; in summer, efficient air conditioning and, if possible, a pool make all the difference.
