Staying in Bangkok

Bangkok is vast and congested, so the right district is chosen first according to the BTS Skytrain and the MRT underground. Sukhumvit lines up large hotels, shopping malls and restaurants along the BTS line; the Nana area there is known for its Arab and halal restaurants, a real comfort for Moroccan travellers. Silom and Sathorn form the business district, lively in the evening, while Siam and Pratunam are a shopper's paradise. On the banks of the Chao Phraya river, luxury hotels and characterful addresses enjoy the calm of the water.

The old town, with the Grand Palace and the major temples, as well as Khao San and Chinatown, lies outside the BTS network: you get around there by boat, taxi or tuk-tuk. The most pleasant season runs from November to February; the heat peaks in March and April, and the monsoon brings showers from June to October. Suvarnabhumi airport is linked to the centre by an express train and taxis; Don Mueang, used mainly by low-cost airlines, is reached by bus or taxi.

Questions about Bangkok

Is it better to stay in Sukhumvit, Silom or on the riverside?

Sukhumvit for convenience, restaurants and halal food; Silom for a business stay; the riverside for calm and setting. For a first trip, Sukhumvit remains the simplest choice.

Do you need to stay near the Grand Palace to visit the temples?

It is not essential: the temples can be visited in a day from any district, by boat or taxi. Staying in the old town has charm, but keeps you away from the metro and the shopping malls.
