Which district to choose depends mostly on your plans. For monuments and museums, the centre (Louvre, Marais, Saint-Germain) lets you do everything on foot. For a tighter budget or a family trip, the well-connected outer arrondissements often offer more affordable and more spacious rooms. If you arrive by train or leave early, a hotel near the relevant station makes logistics easier. Finally, Paris is busy all year round, with peaks in spring, summer and over the end-of-year holidays: book early to have the widest choice.

Where to stay in Paris

• The historic centre (Louvre, Marais, Saint-Germain-des-Prés)

  Ideal for a first visit: the major monuments, museums and the Seine are all within walking distance. Hotels here are often small and rates generally higher.

• Champs-Élysées and the 8th arrondissement

  The district of grand hotels, boutiques and corporate headquarters. Convenient for business travel or an upmarket stay, though quiet in the evening.

• Around the railway stations (Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon, Montparnasse)

  Handy if you arrive or leave by train. Plenty of business and chain hotels; check how quiet the street is.

• Montmartre and the north

  A village feel around the hill, more affordable addresses and real neighbourhood life. Expect stairs and steep streets.

Good to know before you book

• Check the nearest metro station and how many lines serve it: that is what makes the difference day to day.
• Paris rooms are often compact; with a family, look specifically for a family room, a suite or an apartment rather than relying on an extra bed.
• Breakfast is not always included and neighbouring cafés are plentiful, so compare before adding it. If you come by car, make sure the hotel has parking: street parking in Paris is scarce and complicated.
