Staying in Marseille

The Mediterranean city par excellence, Marseille is familiar ground for many Moroccan travellers: Arabic is heard in the markets of Noailles, Maghrebi food is easy to find and the atmosphere recalls that of the great ports. To choose your hotel, first think about what you want to do: stroll around the Vieux-Port and Le Panier, enjoy the beaches and the corniche, or simply have a practical base near Saint-Charles station for exploring Provence. The city is large, but the metro and tram link its districts well.

Summer is hot and very busy, with holidaymakers, cruise passengers and festivals: book early, especially if you want an air-conditioned room. Spring and autumn are pleasant seasons for walking in the Calanques or climbing up to Notre-Dame de la Garde without suffering from the heat. Marseille-Provence airport lies outside the city, at Marignane, and is reached by shuttle bus or taxi. If you come by car, be aware that parking in the centre is complicated: a hotel with its own car park will spare you a lot of trouble.

Where to stay in Marseille

• The Vieux-Port and Le Panier

  The historic heart, with its café terraces, boats to the islands and the colourful lanes of Le Panier. You will find boutique hotels and big brands alike; it is central and lively, sometimes noisy at night, so ask for a room facing the courtyard.

• Around Saint-Charles station, Belsunce and Noailles

  Practical if you arrive by train or plan day trips: hotels in every category, with Maghrebi markets and shops close by. Very busy during the day; pick a quiet street and check recent reviews.

• La Joliette and Euroméditerranée

  The renovated business district, near the Mucem and the ferry and cruise terminal. Modern hotels, often well soundproofed, with direct access to the metro and tram: a good compromise for a business stay or a night before a crossing.

• The corniche, the Prado and Castellane

  To the south, between the Prado beaches, the Vélodrome stadium and leafy avenues. A more residential feel, popular with families; rely on the metro or bus to reach the centre, and avoid match nights if you are after peace and quiet.

Good to know before you book

• Marseille is easy to visit without a car: the metro, tram and buses serve most districts and some entrances to the Calanques. If you do rent a vehicle, choose a hotel with secure parking.
• In summer, an air-conditioned room is no luxury; also check for a lift in the older buildings of the centre, where stairs are common.
• For a family, a family room or an apart-hotel near the corniche or the Prado offers more space and easy access to the beaches, while staying connected to the centre by metro.
