Staying in Brussels

Brussels is an easy destination for Moroccan travellers: French is spoken everywhere, the Moroccan community is one of the largest in Europe, and halal restaurants, butchers and familiar cafés are easy to find. The city is pleasant to explore on foot around the Grand-Place, and public transport (metro, tram, bus) covers the rest of the region. The hotel offer is wide, with many chain hotels in the centre and the European quarter, boutique hotels in the residential districts and furnished apartments.

The climate is mild but often rainy in every season: a well-located hotel limits the walking in the rain. Hotels in the European quarter, geared towards business travellers, are often quieter at weekends and during European holidays. Conversely, the end-of-year festive season and major events draw crowds: book ahead if you are travelling as a family and need connecting rooms or an apartment.

Where to stay in Brussels

• Centre and Grand-Place

  The historic heart, with the Grand-Place, the covered galleries and most museums within walking distance. Practical for a first stay and for getting around without transport; the pedestrian streets are lively, sometimes noisy in the evening.

• European quarter (Schuman)

  The area of the European institutions, with many chain and business hotels. Well served by the metro, quiet at weekends, but with little going on in the evening.

• Ixelles and Saint-Gilles

  Residential and lively districts, appreciated for their cafés, markets and diversity; you will find many Moroccan shops there. Boutique hotels and apartments, a few tram or metro stops from the centre.

• Around Gare du Midi

  The arrival point for international trains, handy if you come from Paris or London by rail. Plenty of functional hotels; the area is busy by day and less pleasant late at night.

Good to know before you book

• Two airports serve Brussels: Brussels Airport (Zaventem), linked to the centre by train, and Charleroi, further away and used by low-cost airlines. Check which one is on your ticket and allow for the transfer time.
• With a family or a group, compare hotels with furnished apartments: in the residential districts, a place with a kitchen lets you cook your own meals and is often more practical for a stay of several nights.
• If you are driving from Morocco or France, check that the hotel has parking: city-centre parking is regulated and a low-emission zone applies to the region, so make sure your vehicle is allowed in.
