Staying in Tunis

Tunis splits into three neighbouring worlds: the listed medina with its maze of souks, the modern city centre around Avenue Habib Bourguiba, and Les Berges du Lac, a recent business district where company headquarters, embassies and international hotels cluster. For a Moroccan traveller the atmosphere feels familiar and the change of scenery is gentle. Central hotels are often of a certain age, but they put the medina and the avenue's cafés within walking distance; those by the lake are newer and more spacious, but you will mostly get around by car.

The northern suburbs, from La Goulette through Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa to Gammarth, are the other main option: beaches, café terraces and seafront hotels, including the large resort complexes of Gammarth. The centre is linked to these towns by road, so you can stay near the sea without giving up the city; check which transport options serve your hotel. Summer is hot and very busy along the coast; spring and autumn suit sightseeing better. Tunis-Carthage airport is close to the city and served by taxis.

Where to stay in Tunis

• The city centre and Avenue Habib Bourguiba

  Cafés, theatres and shops, with the medina a few steps away. Hotels of every category, often older: check the renovation date and ask for a room away from the avenue.

• The medina

  A handful of guesthouses set in old mansions, quiet and full of character. Access on foot only: bring luggage that is easy to carry and ask for a precise meeting point.

• Les Berges du Lac

  A modern business and residential district with recent, spacious hotels, close to the airport. Practical for a business trip, less so for strolling: you get around by taxi.

• The northern suburbs: La Marsa, Gammarth, Sidi Bou Said

  Beaches, restaurants and large seafront hotels, with the charm of Sidi Bou Said close by. The best choice for a family holiday, if you accept some travel to the centre.

Good to know before you book

• Taxis remain the simplest way to move between the centre, the lake district and the northern suburbs; a hotel well placed for your meetings or visits will spare you rush-hour journeys.
• In summer, air conditioning and proximity to the beach matter more than anything; out of season, the centre regains the advantage for sightseeing.
• The Bardo Museum and the Carthage sites can be visited as a day trip from any district; check instead for breakfast and a car park if you are renting a car.
