Hurghada is Egypt's big resort town on the Red Sea: a long coastline of resorts, clear water renowned for diving and snorkelling, sunshine almost all year round and a holiday atmosphere centred on the beach. For Moroccan families it is a restful destination where Arabic is spoken, the food is familiar and the all-inclusive formula dominates. Most hotels are large complexes with a private beach, pools and entertainment, complemented by a few simpler hotels in town.

The choice is less about neighbourhoods than about the type of stay. The resorts are spread along the coast on either side of the centre, and most holidaymakers stay in their hotel or head out on organised excursions. The town centre offers a more local life, markets and restaurants, with more modest hotels. Summer is very hot, winter mild and pleasant for swimming; school holidays and religious festivals are periods of high demand, and family rooms go early.

• The town centre and the marina

  The local side of Hurghada: markets, restaurants, the marina and its promenade, with smaller hotels and apartments. Handy if you want to go out and live at the town's pace, at the cost of a taxi to reach the beaches.

• Along the coast: the resort strip

  Large complexes lined up facing the sea, north and south of the centre, with private beaches, several pools, kids' clubs and all-inclusive dining. Most families choose this formula, staying within the hotel and leaving for excursions.

• The neighbouring resort areas

  Purpose-built tourist zones further from the centre, north and south of Hurghada, more secluded and self-contained. Suited to a rest-only holiday; count on a transfer for any trip into town.

Good to know before you book

• Hurghada International Airport serves the resort directly; most resorts offer a transfer, otherwise taxis are available. Check whether the transfer is included in your booking.
• Read carefully what the all-inclusive formula covers: meals, drinks, water sports and reef access vary from one hotel to another. A hotel with a reef reachable from the beach changes the snorkelling experience.
• With a family, check family rooms, the kids' club, heated pools in winter and the distance between the room and the beach in the large complexes, which can be very spread out.
