Cairo is a vast, lively metropolis that can feel overwhelming on a first visit. For a Moroccan traveller, Arabic makes daily exchanges easier, even if the Egyptian dialect takes a little getting used to. Choosing the right district is decisive: traffic is heavy and distances are long, so a well-placed hotel saves you a great deal of time. The big international chains cluster along the Nile and in the modern districts, while the historic downtown has older hotels and budget addresses.

You have three broad options. The banks of the Nile, between downtown and Zamalek, hold the upmarket hotels with river views. Zamalek, on Gezira island, is a quieter residential district known for its cafés and embassies. Finally, Giza, on the pyramids side, lets you stay facing the monuments but keeps you far from the centre. Summer is very hot; the winter months are more pleasant for sightseeing, and Ramadan changes the rhythm of the city, with lively evenings and calmer days.

Where to stay in Cairo

• Downtown and the Nile banks (Downtown, Garden City)

  The heart of modern Cairo, close to the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Square. Large hotels with Nile views on the river side, simpler addresses in the streets behind.

• Zamalek

  A residential district on Gezira island, greener and quieter, with boutique hotels and restaurants. A good balance between comfort and access to the centre.

• Giza and the pyramids plateau

  To wake up facing the pyramids and visit early, before the crowds and the heat. Expect long journeys to reach the centre and the other sites, though.

• Heliopolis and Nasr City (airport side)

  Modern districts near the airport, with business hotels and shopping malls. Practical for a short stopover or a business trip.

Good to know before you book

• Check the district on a map against the sites you want to see: in Cairo, traffic turns a short trip into a long wait.
• A Nile-view room generally costs more; if the budget is tight, a street-side room in the same hotel gives you the same service.
• For a family visit, favour a hotel with a pool: in summer, afternoons are too hot to be out and about.
