Staying in Sharm El Sheikh
Sharm El Sheikh is a Red Sea resort at the southern tip of Sinai, where people come above all for the sea, the coral reefs and sunshine almost all year round. The offer is dominated by large all-inclusive resorts with private beaches, pools and kids' clubs. The choice is therefore made less by district than by type of hotel and access to the sea: a sandy beach where you walk straight into the water, or a reef with a jetty to reach deeper water.
The resort stretches along the coast: Naama Bay is its historic and lively centre, with a promenade, restaurants and shops; further north, towards the airport, larger and more secluded resorts line up; to the south, the heights and headlands offer views and well-known dive sites. Summer is very hot and winter mild, which makes it a destination for school holidays and the end of the year. The airport is served by taxis and by transfers organised by the hotels, best booked at the same time as the room.
Where to stay in Sharm El Sheikh
Naama Bay and the centre
The lively heart of the resort, with a sandy bay, a pedestrian promenade, restaurants and cafés. Practical for going out in the evening without a car, busier than the rest of the coast.
Northwards, towards the airport
Large all-inclusive resorts on wide beaches, often with a jetty over the reef. Close to the airport, but you depend on the hotel or taxis to get out.
The heights and headlands to the south
Hillside hotels with sea views and direct access to the reef, popular with diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. Check how you reach the beach, sometimes by stairs.
Good to know before you book
- Look at how you enter the water: sandy beach or jetty over the reef. With young children or less confident swimmers, the sandy beach is more comfortable.
- With all-inclusive packages, check what is really included: meals, drinks, water sports and access to à la carte restaurants vary a lot from one resort to another.
- Book the airport transfer together with the hotel and confirm your arrival time; in high season, popular hotels fill up quickly, especially during school holidays.
Questions about Sharm El Sheikh
Is it better to stay in Naama Bay or in a more secluded resort?
Naama Bay lets you walk out in the evening and vary the restaurants; a secluded resort offers more quiet and often a larger beach, but everything happens at the hotel. Choose according to how much you want to move around.
Can you swim directly from the hotel beach?
It depends on the site: some beaches are sandy with a gradual entry, others border a reef and you swim from a jetty. Photos and recent reviews usually make this point clear.
