Staying in Lille

Lille is a compact, warm and easy-going city at the crossroads of France, Belgium and England. Its centre can be covered on foot, between the Flemish façades of Vieux-Lille, the lively main squares and the shopping streets. For Moroccan travellers it is a natural stop on the way to northern Europe and a city where the Maghrebi community is well established, with halal shops and familiar cafés. Accommodation is concentrated around the stations and the centre, with chain hotels, a few boutique hotels and apartments.

The climate is cool and often damp: favour a central hotel to limit walking in the rain. Lille lives to the rhythm of its trains: its two neighbouring stations, Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe, sit right in the city centre, which makes central hotels very practical if you arrive by rail. In September, the Braderie draws a huge crowd, and the Christmas market livens up December: these periods need to be booked early. The rest of the year, demand stays reasonable, apart from trade fairs and big matches.

Where to stay in Lille

• Vieux-Lille and the centre

  The historic and shopping heart: cobbled lanes, boutiques, restaurants and the main squares. Boutique and classic hotels, everything on foot. Some streets stay lively late into the evening.

• Station district (Euralille)

  Around Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe, functional hotels and a large shopping centre. The most practical choice for a train round trip or a short stay, within walking distance of the centre.

• Wazemmes

  A down-to-earth, multicultural district, known for its big Sunday market and its Maghrebi shops. Few hotels, more apartments; a lively, local atmosphere, well connected to the centre by metro.

Good to know before you book

• Lille's airport is modest in size: many travellers arrive by train from Paris or from the Paris and Brussels airports. A hotel near the stations makes these connections simpler.
• If you come by car, check that there is parking: the centre and Vieux-Lille are largely pedestrian or have restricted traffic.
• With a family, look for family rooms or apartments: hotels in Vieux-Lille often occupy old buildings with compact rooms.
