Staying in Agadir

Agadir is southern Morocco's main seaside resort, rebuilt on a modern plan after the 1960 earthquake, with wide avenues and a long bay of fine sand. The climate is mild almost all year round, which makes it popular with Moroccan families in summer and during school holidays, and with European visitors in winter. The seafront, lined by a pedestrian promenade, is where most of the large hotels and holiday clubs are found, while the central districts offer simpler and generally cheaper places to stay.

To choose where to stay, start from what you are coming for. A family beach holiday is easiest in a hotel on the seafront or in the Founty area, with a pool, activities and direct access to the sand. If you plan to head out to Taghazout, the Souk El Had or the countryside inland, a hotel in the city centre or in Talborjt, closer to shops and restaurants, may be enough. In every case, check the distance to the beach, whether the pool is heated outside summer and what the hotel offers for children before confirming your booking.

Where to stay in Agadir

• The seafront and the promenade

  This is where most of the large hotels and holiday clubs are, with direct access to the beach and the pedestrian promenade. Ideal for a beach holiday without a car, as a family or as a couple.

• Founty

  This tourist area at the southern end of the bay brings together club hotels, residences and holiday apartments, often with a pool. Quieter in the evening, it is still well connected to the centre by taxi.

• City centre and Talborjt

  A lively district, handy for shops, cafés and restaurants, with simpler hotels and mid-range addresses. A good choice if you will not be spending every day on the beach.

• The marina and the port

  At the foot of the kasbah, at the northern end of the bay, the marina offers apartments and a few hotels overlooking the boats. A pleasant setting for an evening stroll, slightly away from the bustle of the seafront.

Good to know before you book

• In winter the sun is usually out but the ocean stays cool: if swimming matters to you, go for a hotel with a heated pool.
• In summer and during Moroccan school holidays the city fills up with families: book early and check that the hotel offers genuine family or connecting rooms.
• If you are planning trips to Taghazout, Paradise Valley or the countryside inland, a hotel with parking will make life easier; otherwise taxis are plentiful in the hotel areas.
