Staying in Tangier

Morocco's gateway on the Strait, Tangier has changed a great deal in recent years: the seafront and marina have been redeveloped, the medina restored, and the railway station now welcomes the high-speed train from Casablanca and Rabat. For a weekend as a couple, a family holiday or a stopover before catching the ferry, the city offers every type of accommodation: riads and guesthouses in the medina, classic hotels in the city centre, beach hotels along the bay. Your choice depends mostly on how you intend to experience the city.

Summer is high season: Moroccans living abroad returning home, holidaymakers from the rest of the country and travellers in transit to Europe fill the city, and the good hotels go quickly. Spring and autumn bring soft light and quieter streets, ideal for wandering from the Kasbah down to the Grand Socco. Finally, bear in mind that Tangier is a city of wind and slopes: a hilltop address promises fine views over the Strait, but ask whether access is easy with luggage or a pushchair.

Where to stay in Tangier

• The medina and the Kasbah

  Riads and guesthouses in a maze of lanes between the Petit Socco and the ramparts overlooking the port. This is the choice for charm and authenticity, best if you travel light: cars cannot enter the lanes.

• The city centre, around Boulevard Pasteur

  Classic hotels and newer addresses among the cafés, banks and shops. The Grand Socco and the medina are within walking distance and taxis are everywhere: practical for a short or business stay.

• The seafront and the bay, towards Malabata

  Along the beach you will find beach hotels, residences and large properties with pools, popular with families. The promenade is lively on summer evenings; ask for a sea-view room or a quiet one depending on your priorities.

Good to know before you book

• If you arrive by car, especially through Tanger Med in summer, choose a hotel with parking: street parking in the centre and near the seafront is difficult in high season.
• In the medina, tell your riad what time you will arrive and ask whether someone can guide you from the nearest gate; finding your way at night with suitcases is not easy.
• Tangier is a good base for day trips to Asilah, Tetouan or Chefchaouen: if you plan these excursions, a hotel near the station or with easy access to the main roads will save you time.
