The choice comes down to two atmospheres. In town, conventional hotels and apartments keep you close to restaurants, shops and services, with easy access to the ocean. Along the lagoon, away from the centre, camps and hotels geared towards kitesurfing and water sports line the shore, often on half or full board, with the spot at the foot of the bungalows. Dakhla is a long way from the big cities of the north: many visitors arrive by plane, and a car or the hotel's transfers remain useful for exploring the peninsula, the white dune or the ocean beaches.

  Away from town, hotels, camps and bungalows facing the lagoon and geared towards kitesurfing, often with a water-sports school, a restaurant and shuttles. A quiet holiday atmosphere, provided you accept being far from the shops.

Good to know before you book

• The wind is part of the scenery all year round: an asset for water sports, but pack a jacket for the evenings and check that the hotel's terrace or pool is sheltered.
• Lagoon accommodation is sometimes far from everything: check what your package includes (meals, airport transfers, equipment) before booking.
• During school holidays and major kitesurfing competitions, beds are limited in this small town: book as early as you can.
