Staying in M'diq (Tetouan)

M'diq is a small seaside resort on the Mediterranean coast, right next to Tetouan, and a favourite of Moroccan families in summer. Its beach and seafront promenade make it a holiday destination rather than a stopover town. Accommodation ranges from large club-style hotels and resorts with pools, set along the bay, to holiday apartments and small hotels in the centre. Out of season the atmosphere is much quieter and some establishments run at a slower pace, which can suit a restful stay.

The summer season accounts for most of the visitors: full beaches, heavy traffic on the coastal road and hotels booked out at weekends. If you are aiming for the height of summer, book as early as possible and check the hotel's policy on children and family rooms. Spring and early autumn offer a sea that is still pleasant and far more peace. From M'diq, Tetouan and its listed medina are an easy half-day visit, and the coast lends itself to trips to the neighbouring resorts. A car remains handy for getting around along the shoreline.

• The seafront and the corniche

  Hotels and residences a stone's throw from the beach, with the buzz of cafés and evening strolls. The simplest choice for a beach holiday without a car.

• Along the bay (Tamuda Bay)

  The large resorts and club hotels with pools and equipped beaches are spread along the coast, between M'diq and the neighbouring resorts. Ideal for families, but often isolated: plan on a vehicle or ask about shuttles.

• The centre of M'diq

  Simpler small hotels and apartments close to shops and restaurants. Handy for a tight budget and for living at the town's own pace.

• Tetouan

  For a more cultural stay, sleeping in Tetouan lets you enjoy the medina and reach the beach during the day.

Good to know before you book

• In summer, hotels with a private beach or a pool fill up fast: book early and confirm the family room if you are coming with children.
• Check how you reach the beach from the hotel: some establishments are on the other side of the coastal road.
• Out of season, ask whether the pool, restaurant and activities are open: some services close or reduce their hours.
