Staying in Oujda
Oujda, the capital of the Oriental region, is first and foremost a city of welcome: the city of families coming home for the summer, of visits to relatives and of business trips within the region. It is not a classic tourist destination, and that is precisely what makes it pleasant: a human-scale city, a lively medina around its souks, a city centre laid out along wide boulevards and a well-established café life. The hotel offer is concentrated in the centre, with mid-range properties, a few recent hotels and furnished apartments for family stays.
The busy season is summer, when the diaspora returns and weddings and family gatherings follow one another: central hotels fill up, and it is better to book early. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters, which matters when choosing a room. The city is served by Oujda-Angad airport and by train, and many travellers arrive by car from the north or from the coast. For the beach, the resort of Saïdia can be reached by car, but it is a destination in its own right.
Where to stay in Oujda
The city centre
Around the main boulevards, banks and cafés, most of the city's hotels, within reasonable distance of the railway station. The simplest choice for a short or business stay.
Around the medina
To live to the rhythm of the souks and squares, with more modest addresses and an authentic atmosphere. Parking is harder there, which matters if you come by car.
Residential districts and apartments
For a family staying several days, a furnished apartment in a quiet district offers a kitchen, space and parking. Check the driving distance to the centre.
Good to know before you book
- In summer, book as soon as your dates are set: between diaspora returns and weddings, the city is full and family hotels go first.
- In winter, nights are cold: make sure the room is properly heated, especially in the older hotels of the centre.
- If you come by car, favour a hotel with secure parking; the streets of the centre and the medina are hard to park in.
Questions about Oujda
Which district should you stay in for a family visit to Oujda?
The city centre remains the most practical for doing everything on foot, while a furnished apartment in a residential district suits a long stay or a group better. In both cases, ask for family or connecting rooms.
Is Oujda a good base for going to the beach?
Oujda is not on the sea: the resort of Saïdia and the coast are reached by car. If the beach is the main purpose of the stay, look instead for accommodation directly on the coast.
