Staying in Rabat
As the administrative and diplomatic capital, Rabat is a calmer city than Casablanca, easy to get around and with reasonable distances. The city centre, between the medina and the Hassan district, gathers the classic hotels, close to the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and Rabat-Ville station. Further south, Agdal is the district of cafés and restaurants, popular with families and younger travellers, while Hay Riad and Souissi host newer hotels, ministries and embassies.
Rabat lives to the rhythm of the working week: business hotels are busier from Monday to Thursday, and weekends leave more choice for a family stay or a cultural break. Major festivals and official events, on the other hand, fill the city for a few days. The tramway links Rabat and Salé, Rabat-Agdal station receives the Al Boraq high-speed trains from Tangier and Casablanca, and Rabat-Salé airport is served by taxis. The coast and the Bouregreg valley offer a pleasant breather close to the central districts.
Where to stay in Rabat
City centre and Hassan district
The historic and administrative heart, with traditional hotels, the Hassan Tower and the medina on foot, and Rabat-Ville station nearby. Practical for a first stay and for appointments in the centre.
Agdal
A lively residential district full of cafés, restaurants and shops, near Rabat-Agdal station. A good compromise for families and for those who want to go out in the evening without excessive noise.
Hay Riad and Souissi
Modern Rabat, with large recent hotels, embassies and company headquarters. Ideal for a business stay or if you come by car, less so for strolling on foot.
The medina and the Kasbah of the Udayas
A few guesthouses and riads in the old lanes, facing the ocean and the Bouregreg. Charm guaranteed, but limited car access: plan to arrive with light luggage.
Good to know before you book
- If you arrive by train, check which station is closest to your hotel: Rabat-Ville serves the centre, Rabat-Agdal the southern districts and the high-speed trains.
- Parking is scarce in the city centre; if you come by car, favour a hotel with parking in Agdal, Hay Riad or Souissi.
- Salé, across the river, is linked by tramway: it is an option if central Rabat is full or if you are visiting family on that bank.
Questions about Rabat
Is it better to stay in the city centre or in Agdal?
The centre puts the monuments and the medina within walking distance; Agdal offers more evening life, restaurants and often newer rooms. For a short cultural stay, the centre; for a family stay of several days, Agdal.
Can you stay in Salé to visit Rabat?
Yes, the tramway crosses the Bouregreg and links the two cities continuously during the day. It is practical for a stay focused on the airport or on family, less so for enjoying Rabat in the evening.
